Fishermen are most successful between November and April. Big game fish patrol the deep waters around the reefs at this time of the year, such as blue and black marlin, sailfish, spearfish, yellowfin tuna, dogtooth tune, carangues, wahoos, dorados and bonitos.

In order to catch a big game fish, you need special equipment and a little bit - or rather a lot - of strength. Deep sea fishing is not a relaxing exercise, but a sport full of excitement and strong emotions. You have to sense the fish, attract it and once caught, fight the often heavy catch to get it into the boat, against the currents and waves.
You need to be in good physical condition and have a lot of endurance to be successful, which makes this activity not only a pleasurable pastime for visitors of the island, but also a competitive sport of international reputation.
an international deep sea fishing tournament in Mauritius
The Mauritius Billfish Release International Tournament is a competition that has attracted amateurs and professionals worldwide to the Mauritian waters for the past 4 years. This "catch and release" competition is held each beginning of the year in a convivial atmosphere. For the 2018 edition of the tournament, 56 participants in 14 teams have caught a total of 27 marlins.
The next competition will be held beginning of February 2019 in Black River, on the West coast of the island.
