Ile au Phare is also known as the Fouquets Island ; This rocky island is located between the calm sea on the lagoon side and the high sea , as you will discover when you walk across the island.
The lighthouse was built in 1865. It is 26 m high and has been abandoned for many years. It is located on the reef near the Pointe du Diable in the bay of Grand' Port , which was once the largest port of Mauritius. The Ile au Phare witnessed great battles in the past.
The island is near Ile de la Passe and the Ile Vacoas . As the island is surrounded by coral, it is only accessible by boats with a flat bottom . Its turquoise waters are home to an incredible number of sea urchins , including the Priest’s cap urchin and the stone urchin.
The lighthouse has an interesting construction, with a spiral staircase built from basalt stones . Unfortunately, it was looted several times and you will see that stones are missing. Part of the building is made of coral.
