Champs de Mars : an outing not to be missed !
Thursday, February 5, 2015
Originally used as a field for military manoeuvers, the Champ de Mars was transformed into a racetrack in 1812 in order to unite the English administration of the country at the time and the French owners of the sugar cane fields of the island around a common passion.
To this day, the Champ de Mars, the 2nd oldest racetrack in the world, is an integral part of the Mauritian culture, with races taking place between May and November. Mauritians are fond of horse racing, and every Saturday, many of them visit this magical place in their best outfits to attend the weekly competitions.
At the races, the show happens on the track and on the stands alike : Mauritians share their passion, their tension and their excitement in an electric atmosphere!
Discover this fascinating atmosphere and be part of a Mauritian passion !
